Elegant Kate in Dark Green Catherine Walker for St Patrick's Day

Lá Fhéile Pádraig Sona Daoibh!

Following what has proved to be quite a tumultuous week, it was back to business for the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge this morning who, ahead of their trip to Paris this afternoon, visited the 1st Battalion Irish Guards at Cavalry Barracks, Hounslow.

The annual St Patrick's Day event has become something of a favourite among readers with the Duchess presenting shamrocks every year since the wedding apart from last year. Prince William is colonel of the regiment, which he was made in May 2011; it was his first honorary position in the army. Her Majesty the Queen is Colonel in Chief of the regiment. As you all remember, the Prince opted to wear the Irish Guards tunic for the royal wedding.

Mini-Micks, the cadet wing of the Irish Guards line up ready for the parade.

350 soldiers marched onto the Parade Square at Cavalry Barracks led by their mascot, the Irish Wolfhound Domhnall.

Three cheers for the Queen.

7 year-old Katie, presents a lovely posy to HRH. Her dad is Colour Sergeant Darren Lorimer of The Irish Guards regiment.

The Duchess presented the shamrock to officers and warrant officers, who in turn issue it along the ranks.

I don't know about you, but seeing the ever-so-cute Domhnall is a real highlight for me; the Duchess always looks delighted to see him too :)

The Army in London shared this video ahead of Domhnall getting ready ahead of his big appearance this morning. Simon Perry reports he prepped with "3 boneless chicken thighs, 5-mile walk & scarlet coat".

The 1st Battalion Irish Guards affectionately and widely known as the Micks, are a Light Role Infantry Battalion currently stationed in Cavalry Barracks, Hounslow. The regiment takes its motto, 'Quis Separabit' or 'Who shall separate us?' from the Order of St Patrick, an order of chivalry founded by George III.

As a Foot Guards Regiment the Irish Guards Regiment is involved in state ceremonial and public duties at Buckingham Palace, Windsor Castle, St James's Palace and the Tower of London.

St Patrick's Day is the traditional celebration of the Irish Guards and fresh shamrock is presented to members of the regiment. The Battalion is made up of five companies with a variety of supporting arms, and has deployed in recent conflicts including Iraq and Afghanistan.

The Battalion has also recently carried out a tour of Cyprus under the United Nations. As well as deploying on operations the Battalion has also deployed on various oversea exercises to Bosnia, Latvia, Oman, Kenya and numerous other countries.

The shamrock the Irish Guards receive is tucked behind the Cap Star on the forage cap, as seen on Prince William below.

This follows a century-old tradition inaugurated by Queen Alexandra, wife of King Edward VII, in 1901 when a decree stated:

'Her Majesty the Queen is pleased to order that in future, upon St Patrick's Day, all ranks of her Irish regiments shall wear, as a distinction, a sprig of shamrock in their head dress to commemorate the gallantry of her Irish soldiers during the recent battles in South Africa.'

King George VI presenting shamrock in 1950.

The tradition has become synonymous with a number of royals since, most notably the Queen Mother, who had a long affiliation and love for the Irish Guards after attending the the annual military parade for the first time in 1927. It wasn't until 1964 she started to present the Royal Shamrock to the Battalion, describing it as a "great pleasure which has enabled me to forge a link with the regiment I greatly cherish". The regiment provided the pallbearers for her funeral in 2002.

A lovely photo of the late Queen Mother and Her Majesty at the parade in 1995 at Chelsea Barracks.

The parade concluded with a march-past where Prince William took the salute.

The Duke and Duchess then met members of the regiment before sitting for official Officers' and Sergeants’ Mess photographs.

Afterwards they met soldiers and their families.

The Duke and Duchess visited the Guardsmen's lunch.

The longest-serving Guardsman in the battalion proposed a toast to the royal couple, and thanked the Duchess for presenting the shamrock.

The Duke and Duchess enjoy a sip of their Guinness.

Simon Perry shared a video of the toast.

Below we see Kate in 2012 and 2013 wearing a green Emilia Wickstead coat; in 2014 the Duchess opted for her very stylish Hobbs London Persephone trench; and in 2015 she surprised us in a chestnut brown Catherine Walker coat.

Today, Kate opted for a bespoke Catherine Walker coat as she did in 2015. This time, a beautiful dark green military-style coat with velvet trim at the collar, pocket flaps and cuffs. Catherine Walker and Diana's fashion relationship was an iconic one (something like Kate enjoys with Sarah Burton) so it's wonderful to see another generation supporting the fashion house, and so so successfully too. By and large I've mostly loved the elegant and sophisticated pieces by the brand Kate has worn.

There are notable similarities between today's Catherine Walker coat and the style the Duchess chose for her arrival in New Zealand at the beginning of the 2014 tour.

Kate wore a rich Lock & Co. green hat, which perfectly complements her coat. @KatieMidleton on Twitter noticed it's actually a repeat. Kate first wore the piece on Christmas Day 2015.

The choice of updo worked very well with the overall look.

Once again, the Duchess wore the Irish Guards gold shamrock brooch this year. The three-leaf brooch, which has been worn by the Queen Mother and Princess Anne, belongs to the regiment and they determine to whom it be loaned. Kate also wore a sprig of shamrock on her lapel.

Kate accessorised with her very pretty Monica Vinader Siren earrings. The $195 earrings are described: "These simple, sophisticated earrings are great for everyday wear. The organic, irregular shaped multi-faceted Green Onyx gemstone is encased in 18ct Gold Plated Vermeil on Sterling Silver." They are currently available on Monica Vinader's website.

And her Cartier Ballon Bleu watch.

Cartier

It very much looks like the Duchess sported a new pair of Gianvito Rossi pumps in a rich green. We'll update should the exact pair be found.

And as seen below, Kate carried a new green clutch.

As always it was a very special event. One more shot of Domhnall? I think so :)

Next, the Cambridges will travel to Paris. What's on the agenda for day one? They are due to meet President Hollande at Élysée Palace at 4.30 pm (3.30 pm UK time). They will then attend a reception at the British Embassy Paris to mark the launch of "Les Voisons" which will celebrate cultural ties between the United Kingdom and France. And this evening the couple will attend a black-tie dinner hosted by the Ambassador. The British Ambassador to France, Edward Llewellyn shared this beautiful photo from his official residence, Hôtel Charost, where William and Kate are said to be staying.

We'll have a 'First Look' photo once images are available from the arrival, and I expect we'll see a chagce of outfit for the Duchess.

Amazing! Home run for me! Finally an outfit I am in love with this year! The hair and hat were perfection as well! She looked truly polished to perfection! I can't wait to see what she wears in Paris

  2. I'm not keen on double breasted, personally, but Domhnall can wear whatever he wants! He's the highlight for me too.

Kate looked absolutely lovely in 2012 and 2013. Today she looked nice but she'll have a hard time topping those two years for me I think.

    1. I agree about Domhnall. And also about her earlier looks.
It is a nice coat, not my fave but nice I give her that. But I would be happy to see her every year at this event without showing up in new coats which I find absolutely unnecessary. I think this event has nothing to do with fashion choices, she should balance her act out a bit more.

She looked gorgeous today but those first two years remain my favorites also, bluhare. This is a rare event where I'm more excited to see someone else besides Kate (Domhnall of course). Thanks for the extra bits about him, Charlotte ;-)

Great to see them at this event. :) And in a good mood!

I must say, KP was VERY clever today in posting previous royals giving out shamrocks! And their wordings with "William being there as colonel and Kate ACCOMPANYING him". Good for them!

I'm kind of torn on the look. Don't get me wrong, she looks great. I'm kind of grading on a scale so this is major nitpicking.

I think I like the coat. It's interesting. But the hat doesn't 100% match and I think this coat would look better at an event where less stuff was placed on the coat. I would love this coat with her black brimmed hat with velvet trim for example.

Although, after getting better pictures and realizing that the hat is green and not "trying to be black" I like the colour combo more!

I do like the look. Just some small nitpicks :) I like all the pieces of the look, and 80% like them together. But I look forward to seeing the pieces style with other things as well :)
The general impact of the look is good!

    And I like her shoes!

I am soooo looking forward to Paris :D Only 2(-ish) hours left!!

And Happy St Patrick's Day for those who celebrate.

    1. I agree Rebecca about the KP PR today. It was very clever. I also like the way they are pushing William as the colonel. I'm taking that as a sign my thought was right, that William feels very strongly about being the royal associated with the regiment. Kate is there to support him and did so at other past appearances.

Even if in reality I'm wrong, I still like to put that positive spin on it for William. LOL!

  5. Happy St. Paddy's! Lovely post, as always, Charlotte. I think this is Kate's best St. Patrick's Day look yet. I love the dark green shade with the velvet trim & the hat matches perfectly! I had a feeling she would wear her Monica Vinader earrings...are those shoes new? It's great to see Domhnall too :) Love the photos of the Queen Mother...you can see the joy on her face when she attended the parade.
Not long for Paris now, can't wait!

  6. Wow, the Duchess owns a lot of green coats!

I'm not a fan of this look. The buttons, the hat, the shoes the same color as the coat - it all looks a little too much like a costume to me and not at all stylish.

I think the "almost uniform/costume" look works very well for this event :)

    2. I agree with others about the earrings. They do look a little cheap. She has other options that would have matched the quality of the Catherine Walker coat. She still sparkled brightly today.

  7. I LOVE THIS COAT!!!! I would prefer it with a different pair of earrings, maybe the ones she wore to Princess Charlotte's Christening.
Also is that the same hat as the 2015 Christmas Hat?

  8. Great Post!! Kate looks great! I loved the coat, and how the buttons gleam! In the picture of them looking at the parade she looks beautiful and William looks pensive. As we all,I am very interested on their body language and how they interact with each other and maybe other people during this tour.
I can't wait for this tour! Happy St. Patrick's day everyone!

I haven't been a huge fan of Catherine Walker designs but I love this coat! It's stunning. Kate looks happy, and not fake happy. I have read articles suggesting that she's upset with William because of last weekend but my guess is that she trusts him and had allowed him that time to blow off steam and relax. The fact is that they both are going to be meeting good-looking, sexy, members of the opposite sex, and it's okay to enjoy their company a bit - remember how Kate was when in the presence of Ben Ainslie, and I don't blame her one bit!

I want to say also, as I didn't get to comment much on the previous posting this week being very busy, that I have to think that William must be somewhat stressed by the Paris trip, being the first official, public visit to the city since Diana's death. And knowing that everyone is watching him, as they did when he was a boy during the days after her accident, must be stressful, and a terrible reminder of that terrible time. That may have played a part in his actions last weekend....and really all he did wrong was to drink too much.

    ReplyDelete

    1. Pam, actually I don't think it's Paris, I think he's stressed at the deadline up ahead that he's been dreading his whole life. Becoming a Full Time Royal & giving up what freedom he's had to live the life that he's wanted (as much as possible). I had posted last round, that his "acting out" reminded me strikingly of when the "marriage decision" was bearing down on him in 2007 & how he broke up with Kate, "acted out & self sabotaged". Very similar timeline & behavior now in 2017 with the "End" looming for him.... It's a lot more to be reluctant & upset about than this Paris Trip, since he's been back there several times since Diana's Death in 1997. Just my own thoughts.....

    2. Pam from Boston17 March 2017 at 16:24

Becca, I actually replied to your post about William acting out, agreeing with you, but for some reason my comments never appeared (as have several of my comments lately). However, it's hard for me to find the time to post comments to begin with, never mind re-do them. Anyway, what you say does makes sense, however, I do have to wonder if this very public trip to Paris isn't weighing on him as well. His previous visits were private but now he has to go and act happy to be there, whether he actually is or not.

In any case, I don't think Kate is too worried or upset. She looks too good to have lost any sleep over it the past week!

      Delete
    3. A fascinating perspective Becca. Thank you. I do think for my part I have to also take into account the difference between official visits and unofficial ones. The paparazzi are rather more shall we say direct? during an official visit; when one is subject to both I think one's perspective may change.

  11. Oh boy she looks gorgeous!!! The old Kate is back! This silhouette is so trim, so beautifully proportioned for her, love the color and the hat is perfect! Her make-up and her attitude are lovely and sparkling. The only critique I would have would be the hair - although I looove an updo with her hats, this one is a bit bulbous - a bit round, it's aging. Deflate it just a bit and it would be stunning. Also, a little tired of the matchy-match shoes ie: blue with blue, green with green, etc. It's a little bit like the Queen and her uber-matchy-match colors. But all in all, it is a radiant look! A definite HIT!

  12. Such a gorgeous coat! Catherine Walker designs and Kate are always a winning collaboration. Btw, does Kate have some new green shoes? At first I thought that they were her black shoes which she wore many times before but upon closer inspection, they look green. All lovely, so nice to see. Domhnall is always a delight. One of my favourite events of the year and that is true for many.

I thought Catherine Walker the moment I saw the coat - their clothes are always a cut above the rest in every sense of the word. It was so much like that red coat and is quite wonderful. In fact, I believe I like it better than the red for the green velvet trim adds something. It should have an interior button in the front of the skirt - but no harm done.

Hat and hair are perfect and Kate is glowing. William looks handsome too in that uniform - one of the best.

  28. Have not read other comments yet, but felt the need to comment as I was one who was quite disappointed last year with the the great shamrock debacle. I had felt it important that they take the time to make it to this event as the commute to Paris allows for it. So was pleased for that when it was announced. In the event, given the week she had I thought Kate hit it out of the park. Outfit was pitch perfect, and mostly new - which I think is as important if not more important for home soil military events. As I said in my comments on the ski issue, full best value is very important for these events honoring those that serve their country every day. As for her demeanor? Perfect. Warm, engaged, and enthusiastic, without being manically so. Again, given the week she had, anything less would have been picked apart. Dohmnall is too precious for words. William? I have nothing to say. He will be in my dog house a very long time (while Dohmnall is invited up on to my couch). I wish Kate all the best for the next two days. After all - I have always found work to be the best medicine.

  30. Charlotte, What a Lovely Post & up so quickly as always! :) I've long had a special place in my heart for Kate, but Wow what a Treasure! I hope the UK cherishes her & realizes what a Gem they have in her! I feel like she has the Spunk & Vision of The Queen Mother & Queen Mary (but much more gentle) She is amazing! We have seen her go from the one learning the ropes, to the one leading the way! She is now a consummate professional & is in the moment 100%! She knows she is there to Honor & Serve. This is a special day for the regiment & their families & one puts their own stuff aside & gives 100% joy to those people! The fact that she is smiling with her whole face & has that twinkle in her eye shows that she is giving to & responding to others.... not herself. Sometimes the most uplifting thing is to Give Joy to others! She (to me) has just stepped out into the next phase of her life... as a True Princess of The Realm. She's not being carried & guided along here, She's doing the carrying & guiding. William may be a Prince of the blood, but he didn't "earn" that title & he's done a bunch to disrespect it. While Kate Has earned & "respected" The Title. Any Respect or Gravitas that comes... she will have earned it, due to her own Dedication & Moxie! What she has shown in this one appearance... Is That The UK Can Count On Her! She Will Be A Positive Representative of The Monarchy & The UK, during Rain or Shine! She is a Consummate Professional & will pull William along if she must. But Everyone can Count on Her! Bravo Kate! (that's what you get when you haven't had your title "handed" to you.... you earn & respect it & protect it & you take it seriously!)
She looked Gorgeous Today! I Love her Ensemble! So sophisticated & I love the touch of velvet, giving it dimension. As well as the military nod of the design. Elegant & Spot On from Top To Toe! I'm hunkered down getting well, so this day of coverage will be such a treat & has already lifted my spirits! Thank you again Charlotte for this Amazing Blog & All The Hard & Excellent Work That You Do! Maintenant nous allons a Paris! Je suis tres excite!

Becca, I love your comment :) I agree with everything you said and youhave put it so very well into words!

    2. Becca - you said that all so perfectly. Hope you get well soon. And yes thank you Charlotte for all you do - so quickly, completely, and professionally. We are so fortunate to have you.

    3. Totally agree. William is a disgrace. Too bad they couldn't make Catherine the Queen in her own right. If it wasn't for her, William would be nothing, and also if it were not for her, too bad they could not make Harry King. But history will tell the truth. Catherine will be honored down through the ages.

    4. Very much agree, Becca. Glad she didn't react like I would have, lol. I must have missed Princess 101 that day. My Princess training has gaps. :) I am of the opinion that her missing St. Patrick's there last year was William's doing, not hers. Not to make William out as more of a villain, lol, but I believe his preference was the real reason for her absence. Love the outfit. It is standard Kate, but it is a nice standard to have.

  31. I like the coat, I think the additional rows of buttons on the red Catherine Walker in NZ works better with her torso and makes for a more complete look. Her up-do was just lovely! Always a fun event.

  32. My first thought was how similar this coat is to the red arrival coat. Thank you for including a photo of the red coat. Both are absolutely stunning. I love Catherine Walker.

Ive got to say after looking back, that 2015 in the brown coat and hat was my hands down favorite outfit for this event, followed closely by the 2012 coat. I thought they both looked great today, love william in that dark suit, he should stick to black, it looks so much better on him than the navy her wears All The Time. Wish maybe the cuffs on today's coat would have been black and she could have worn a black hat and the black pumps with the cutouts (cant remember what they were called!) too much green is just, well, too much green!!

on another note, i think its quite hilarious that the newspapers are speculating about how much trouble is their marriage in after Wills ski trip. seriously people, so he went and tied one on with his friends on a ski trip, that does not mean divorce! iim sure they arent happy about the publicity but one must pick their battles.

  34. Just curious as to why you said this has been a tumultuous week. Did something happen within the royal family this week?

    1. Paige, have you been under a rock?:) Not sure if you are being funny or really missed it? If the latter, just google William Ski Holiday. Sorry if my shock seemed rude. It's hard to be sure about subtle humor sometimes when reading one's written words.

    2. Not under a rock, just down with the flu this week :) I was aware of his ski trip and that he didn't attend a service with the other senior members of the royal family this week (which I thought was in poor taste) but I had no idea that his behavior was reported as being too wild or anything like that. Now that I googled it, I read something about his hand being around the waste of some brunette! What is he thinking???

  37. Kate looks nice but not my favorite. But the real star of this event is Domhnall!!! Hes so cute! I love the pictures of past events its nice that this is incorporate to bring the past/tradition back. Awesome job on the post as always!

  38. I really love the coat and new shoes. I would have liked to see her wear the Kiki McDonough Green Amethyst and Tourmaline earrings she wore to meet the Prime Minister in India during the 2016 tour.

    1. I agree. Both Kikis are nicer earrings and pack a bigger visual punch.

  39. So great to see William & Kate enjoying their pints of Guinness, I think Kate needs it after this week!

  40. Green envy - as I love this coat. Does it have all of the same attributes as other items in Kate's wardrobe - yes! Kate has been wearing double-breasted military style coat dresses from the beginning. Many of us still want to see the Navy McQueen in a re-wear. This coat is well done IMHO for this event.

Yes, she's all in green but again, I think this is a style that Kate has adopted and will continue. She was head to toe in red for the Garter event. I don't think there's anything wrong with it, if it works for her.

Was surprised at the earrings - I would have worn the emeralds. Or even the round gold disc posts with the pearls.

  41. Very impressed with your Irish, Charlotte. Domhnall is a common enough Irish name. We tend to spell it Donal . Kate looks lovely today. Happy St Patrick's Day from a wet and windy Ireland.

  42. Long time lurker for a couple of years. I love this coat and the red one. Only time I thought she looked like a princess. Won't be commenting much as I just enjoy reading charlotte's posts. Happy St. Patrick's Day

  43. Wow, this look is a total win for me today! Kate looks completely chic and put together. I adore military styled anything and that updo is a great compliment to the hat. It's nice to see them working this event, since the people have come to love seeing them hand out shamrocks annually, and it's also a good PR boost for the couple after William's trip. Kate seems happy and relaxed, so I wonder how she was affected by the frenzy? I already commented on the first Paris dress, but I'm looking forward to seeing the rest her sartorial choices.

  44. Great lines, great tailoring. Why can't the royal family give her REAL emeralds? Kate does the best she can but at this stage of the game, Diana had massive amounts of incredible jewelry which set her apart as a princess. Why is Kate not being afforded the same courtesy?

    ReplyDelete

    1. Anon 22:11. I think that's because Kate isn't in the same position Diana was. Kate's husband is second in line to the thrown, Diana's husband was next in line. That's a considerable difference for jewelry being loaned. That's why you'll never see "the good stuff/fancy stuff" on royals further down the line. Ie. crown princess Mary will get the better jewels than princess Marie ever would, because their ranks differ. Mary's husband is next in line, where as Marie's husband, is not.

    2. She's got real emeralds! A small pair of cluster earrings which she often wears, and a spectacular set of dangly earrings and bracelet which she wore in America. She was hardly going to turn up at a formal daytime engagement dripping in jewels.

  45. Love this look as a start to the weekend. As I checked this morning, I went: coatdress - love it! Love th look on her, great fit, nice accents with the cuffs and collar, shoes - good, hat - totally fine with it. Then I hit the earrings. Don't get me wrong, I love them - I have a pair from Azuni that look freakishly like Kate's, but mine were 15-20 dollars/pounds ad I am wearing them with jeans and a t-shirt. I just can't see them with a great dress at a formal event. She has several Kiki McDonough pairs that would have worked much better...in my humble opinion.

Love the coat movement! I really, really, really like the shoes!
Oh! I am happy for myself because as soon as I saw the photos I noticed it was the Christmas hat! :p (Maybe I read / watch her too much? :p )

    Great post!
